How Different Lights Affect Your Eyes


We always try to safeguard our eyes from various factors such as dust, sand, and light. These factors can have a severe impact on our eyes if we do not take precautionary measures. In fact, it may seem to be surprising but different types of lights have a different impact on our eyes. Here are some ways which show how different types of lights affect our eyes.

Intense Bright Light

Even though intense bright light helps in seeing things clearly, too much exposure to this light can cause severe damage to our eyes. Selecting an appropriately bright arrangement is crucial as it assists in providing clear vision. If you have incredibly bright light, it can severely damage your retina. Intense bright light can also damage the macula and result in macular degeneration over time. This damage is often long-term and can even cause severe eye pain.

Ultraviolet Rays

Ultraviolet rays or UV rays are dangerous to the eyes and prolonged exposure to these rays can severely affect your vision as well. There are numerous sources of ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet rays are radiated from the following sources:

  • Prolonged exposure to sunlight.
  • Fluorescent lights.
  • Halogen bulbs.

These rays are capable of damaging your cornea. Eventually, you may experience pain in your eyes. In worst case scenarios, UV rays can lead to blurred vision.

Blue Light

People whose eyes are exposed to blue light for prolonged hours can damage their eyes. The most common sources of blue light are computer and laptop screens, television sets, and mobile phones. The blue light in these devices helps in making things look crystal clear. But at the same time, when your eyes are exposed to this light for an extended period, it can harm the retina. People whose eyes are exposed to blue light for a longer period of time can develop dry eyes. Another common problem that is associated with blue light is Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) in which the retinal cells get damaged.

Low light

Low light or dim light are considered to be perfect on some occasions. When you are in a dimly lit area, your pupils expand more than usual to be able to see correctly. Expanding your pupils for a certain amount of time is normal. But, if the pupils are expanded for a longer period, you may end up with stressed eyes. When your eyes are stressed, you start feeling dizzy and may even experience a burning sensation.

You should always be careful about the lighting conditions you work as prolonged exposure to different and improper light can damage your eyes. Therefore, to take care of your vision, visit a local optometrist once a year for eye exams. It helps him to identify if your vision is affected due to different lights or other factors. In case something is not right, you can take precautionary measures immediately and ensure your vision is not affected.
